My name is Dr. Lisa D. Stinson, Ph.D. and I see patients for individual psychotherapy and psychological assessment at my office in Colorado Springs. I am also on the clinical faculty at the University of the Rockies where I work as an adjunct professor and teach masters and doctoral level students in the clinical practice of psychology.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy can assist the individual in finding the source for his or her anxiety or depression, address relationship difficulties and family and occupational conflicts, the psychological pain brought on by physical illness, emotional, physical or sexual abuse occurring in childhood or as an adult, and feelings of low self worth.

My therapy practice is fairly general, meaning that I have training and experience to treat a wide range of psychological problems. However, I tend to specialize in relationship difficulties (parent/child relationships, partner relational problems, work relationships) and the treatment of trauma (combat trauma due to military deployment, rape, childhood abuse and neglect).

Sessions typically last 50 minutes and can be as often as once or twice per week. During these sessions, patients have the opportunity to explore personal issues with someone who has a unique set of clinical skills and is more neutral than those who are more directly involved with the situation. This relationship, provided in a confidential and safe setting, leads to a deeper understanding of the issues, and also promotes the conditions that make long lasting change possible.

What to Expect

Once an individual contacts me for an appointment, we will meet for an initial evaluation that will last one or two counseling sessions. During that time, I will take an extensive background history and ask many questions about your present situation. During this initial evaluation, I will be attempting to form an opinion as to whether or not my experience and training would be of assistance to you. At the same time, you are evaluating me, as it is important that you feel I am someone with whom you feel comfortable talking to. At the end of this brief evaluation period, we will mutually decide in which direction to continue.

Insurance

I currently take the following insurance:

  • TRICARE/TriWest
  • TRICARE for Life
  • Medicare
  • Ceridian LifeWorks Service (EAP)
  • Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield (Coming soon)

Active Duty Service Members who wish to use TRICARE benefits may not self-refer for behavioral health care outside of the Military Treatment Facility (MTF) and must always have a referral from his/her Primary Care Manager (PCM). However, once your PCM has made the referral to be seen out in the civilian community, an appointment can be made at my office. Call me or email me if you have questions and I can help walk you through the process.

Military Dependents and Retirees do not need a referral from the MTF to see a mental health provider off post. If you would like to see me using your TRICARE benefits or TRICARE for Life/Medicare benefits, please contact me at (719) 638-1667 to schedule your appointment.
